Congrats dude! Though truthfully I hope you won't be too busy in your line of work, just cuz the less you're busy, the less IED's and whatever else you'll have to disarm or "dispose" of.
My wife's cousin who's she's always been very close with volunteered this year. Being that he already had a CDL, they made him a driver and sent him to Iraq. Needless to say, that's a pretty dangerous job...sure enough twice within his 4 months there, he (his truck) was hit twice with roadside bombs. The more serious instance threw him across the cab, and he slipped a disc in his back, but overall he's ok and very lucky. He's glad he's back in the states recuperating now, but part of him wants to be with his company and finish his tour. On a side note, he also spoke of how unexploded ordinance from the Gulf War often littering certain areas can be deceptively dangerous...cluster bombs specifically. So your new skills will certainly be needed and will help save lives. Not much else I can do for ya, except give an exalt...done.

cluster bombs specifically. Yeah, those things are bad juju. Thank you and best wishes to the "cousin-in-law." It will probably be a year at least, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure that I'll get very intimately acquainted with IEDs.

Damn
I'm proud to have you as a fellow guitarist. Be safe. I guess at least when you get called in, the "threat" has already been identified. Very dangerous no doubt, but your skills even the playing field at least a little.
God Bless

This post may considerably depress the mood of this thread, but since I mentioned him in the quote below, I figured here was appropriate. My wife's cousin who she's always been very close with volunteered this year. Thank you and best wishes to the "cousin-in-law." Unfortunately we never got to see him...he passed away in his sleep at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Last week (getting the news and subsequent military funeral) was brutally shocking and heartbreaking. Like I said, my wife was very close to him growing up...more like brother and sister than cousins. Thus I'd known him since high school. He was a fellow guitarist, so we'd often discuss music/gear and trade licks. I was glad to hear he was able to get a guitar while serving in Iraq. Worst of all is that he was married with 2 young boys. What can one say? There's not really appropriate words for these situations. Just when it seems we would all welcome him home pending a medical discharge, he's gone. It's unfair, crushing, and life-altering. He was a passionate guitarist/musician, a loving dad/husband, a dependable friend, and a patriotic Soldier. I am proud to have known him...he is sorely missed. Short local article here

I am truly saddened by the loss to your family and to this country. There is nothing I can say other than I offer you my sympathies and offer this fine young soldier a salute. God bless him, his, you and yours.
