The last bit of my birthday gear came in the other day, and it is an >MI Audio Crunchbox<I'm still in the honeymoon stages, so I won't go into too much detail about it yet. I will say this though, it is amazing! It's about as close to a "Marshall in a box" as you can get. It has a real nice Plexi to JCM800 type crunch, but has more gain on tap, if needed. My amp (Traynor YCV50 Blue) already has a really nice high gain Marshall type distortion, so I mainly use the Crunchbox for the more vintage type crunch tones. However, with my EQ pedal in front of is as a boost, or after it for fine tuning, I can get pretty much any distortion tone I need out of it. More info to come once I get more time with it.

After spending some more time with the pedal, I am still in love with it ;D! It took a bit of time tweaking my amps EQ and the internal presence dial inside the pedal to get it just right, but it's right where I want it now . I won't even be using my amps distortion anymore . With a little twist of the gain knob, and the use of my EQ pedal, I've got all my distortion needs covered. From early AC/DC to Van Halen to Metallica, it's all there.

Sounds cool bud, i don't often use my amps distortion, i prefer to use a clean(ish) channel and use a pedal for some dirt; i just find it a little more versatile for my needs, i'm currently down to just 2 o/d's and 1 distortion on my board, but if i keep reading this thread that could change! dam GAS

Though my Boss GT-6 has a huge array of distortion, I find that I only really use the distortion I get out of my Vox PAthfinder, becuase I looooooooove the sound you can get out of a good tube amp. I'm planning on purchasing a Big Muff soon, becuase it has the most beautiful shit-sounding tone of any distortion pedal I've ever seen/heard/played... That with another Electro-Harmonix pedal, probably a Holy Stain and/or Memory Man, my pedal board might start amounting to something signifigant and versatile.
I think GAS is one vice I'd like to keep around... More brandy, please!

Also, I have a question for those who are a bit more experienced in the world of pedals than I; What's a volume pedal good for? I can imagine, but I've never actually put it into an actual real life context. Are they just a useful tool for controlling absolutely everything that's going on in your rig?

A volume pedal can be useful in several different ways. When it is in front of your amp (or dirt pedals) it's just like lowering the volume on your guitar. This is typically how I use it. It can also be used in the effects loop to get smooth volume swells, or leave it cocked back a little for normal playing and full up for a volume boost for lead. When it's in the effects loop, the distortion is retained through the whole sweep. When it's in front of your dirt, then it will lower the gain and volume.

Plus you can do those cool swelling wails with lots of delay!
