So i've been tryin to learn how to do pinched harmonics the last couple days, but it would seem that when i manage to do one the volume of the pinched harmonic is much lower than if i just pick that same fretted note normally, is this correct? or is it just that my technique sucks!? i'm gettin some squeally sound and sustain just at a much lower volume, i know you gotta find a sweet spot for the actual pickin and that they're supposedly easier on the bottom 4 strings than the top 2, i've dimed the o/d and distortion pedals but still a big volume drop (the notes i'm tryin these on are: A 5th, B 7th on the D string, D 5th, E 7th on the G string) any advice appreciated, thanx guys

Maybe you're choking the string with your thumb edge too much, which is having that effect you mentioned. I think it may be a case of practice; once you get it down it's there for life though.

When I do 'em, I choke up my grip on the pick towards the tip, turn the tip slightly towards the bridge, while the edge of my thumb runs behind it. The edge of the thumb and the edge of the pick are almost parallel. So with a downstroke, the pick makes contact, then nearly (if not) simultaneously, my thumb grazes the string, as such:

i cant seem to do pinch harmonics with a pick for some reason...then again i dont use a pick very often at all.... i tried to apply the same logic i use when i use my fingernail and my thumb when i use a pick but its often crap sounding...

I find this funny, and I can't figure it out....
I can hit pinch harmonics pretty much every time on my Les Paul.
I hit them about 25% of the time on my Ibanez. The Ibanez has hotter active pickups...

I'm guessing that it is because the harmonic points on the Ibanez are in a slightly different spot, since it's a 25.5" scale neck, as opposed to the 24.75" scale neck on the LP. You're probably more used to playing the LP, so you automatically try to PH at the same spots on the Ibanez as you do on the LP, and it doesn't work, because they're not in the same spot.

Thanks for the input, but the Music Man EVH I used to have before I got the LP had the 25.5" scale neck and I could hit artificial harmonics on it all day too...didn't have any issue's when I went from that to the LP. I used to go back and forth between the EVH and the SG I used to have, and I could hit them on both of those guitars....
I'm thinking it may have something to do with the position of my picking hand......the strings are a different height from the body on the LP vs. the Ibanez. Or something to do with the Floyd Rose system....I just don't know...
Not trying to hijack this thread, just thought I'd throw it out there.
