so what kind of setting do you guys normally pput yourselves into when attempting to write? and what goes through your head? do you carry little notepads with you everywhere you go?listen to calm music? or need total peace and quiet? go for walks?
for me i would light candles, have some alcohol, play some classical music...ha yeah i know its like some ritual...but then most of the time nothing ever comes to my head doing it that way...
for me its much more of a random thing..i used to write a whole lot more when i first started out at uni where i would sit some where while waiting for class, watch ppl walk around and just day dream abt stuff, ppl's priorities in life...and of course sometimes i get those writers block which is annoying..but it hapens
do share!

I've always had a problem with writing lyrics, I don't know whether it's because I can't (even with an A-level in English) or whether I'm too scared of writing down my thoughts and feelings in a language that everyone can read.

I have an extremely hard time writing lyrics as well. I never can translate what's in my head into something that's comprehensible on paper, and you can forget about it having anything resembling a song structure.

I sit down with my guitar, my drumset, a pad of paper, and my itunes open to the last thing i recorded. I think about some random thought I had that day.
For example, I'm partially obsessed with monkeys...wierd, but whatever. (My avatar) So I wrote a song about monkeys.
I'm not about to release it to the world, but the more you write, the better and easier it'll become.

I haven't wrote a song in quite sometime. Or lyrics.
When I do get ideas though, they all seem to fall together very easily. No rituals, no certain atmosphere, just myself and typically an open Word document. I only write when I really have a strong emotion about something, it seems to help.

I don't sing, so I've never really written any lyrics. However, the singer in the last band I was in did something pretty interesting. When we instrumentalists were writing songs he would improvise nonsensical lyrics or jibberish over the music that sounded good and when he got something he liked he would fill in real words that sounded similar. It actually worked really well.

I actually heard the Beatles were known for doing this... and I heard there were some bootleg recordings of some of their songs with the gibberish lyrics instead of the final song floating out there somewhere. ( I haven't heard them myself so this could be just a wild rumour.. ) If true, pretty cool if you ask me.

I have worked with guy who does just what hammurabi explained and it works well. For me the few times I have written lyrics I just wrote thoughts on the particular subject matter and latter made it more coherent verbally. I might come up with a line that I like and fit it in. Sometimes it helps if you have a rhythm in mind first. Just my 2 cents.

For me, sometimes just a word or a phrase comes to mind and i try and right a song around it, pretty much everything i've written is crap, just sounds too cheesy when i read it back also i have a hard time tryin to fit chords to lyrics too so none of my songs so far have seen the light of day, but i'll keep tryin, it's kinda ironic really cause i took up guitar to try and create my own songs rather than play other peoples

My lyric-writing MO isn't set in stone, but I usually read something for a while to get me into the mood. And as Adam said, having an interesting idea or strong emotion from some other source is a big help (no, "other source" should not read "drugs and alcohol"... yet ). But on the whole, I'm at my most creative when I sit down and force myself to write - although I have just turned stuff out in the heat of the moment before.

Notebooks and the humming method is my summarization. Substances either really help me write... or they just turn it into dribble. Being sober works the same was as well... so I guess its just a mood I get in. I don't like listening to music before I write songs because I get paranoid I might take something accidentally. Akira (ha feels weird using peoples sns sometime) you can write lyrics. My lydar goes off (I was going for gaydar (being that I was talking to you ) , but... none of this whole part of the post worked out. I just think you can write Sean... even though half our convos are in icons. I really should just save this for msn.

I'm very interested in writing songs, although I don't have any idea where to start. I do love to write (perhaps not to the extent of say, a Jolly, but I minored in English and really do enjoy it). I'm not very musically inclined, so learning the guitar has been a rather monumentus task for me. I can't imagine writing music, but think I could write lyrics to existing songs. My wife keeps hassling me to write a song about her. I keep thinking of "idiot dog" ROTFL.

My wife keeps hassling me to write a song about her. I keep thinking of "idiot dog" ROTFL. Hahahahaha. It took me a long time to get comfortable writing down my feelings. Probably because the first songs I wrote were way too literal and it was always a little too obvious what I was writing about. Then...I dunno, I guess I discovered the metaphor or something. Nowadays I try not to write about feelings of mine unless I can wrap them up in some juicy metaphors. Because really, that's what I look for in lyrics - interesting language. There are of course exceptions to the rule...."Idiot Dog" is about as literal as it gets. And I don't know if you remember "Aunt Pauline has Boots of Fire," but that was pretty literal too. I consider those more my 'joke songs' though, so I'm still able to appreciate them. Anyways, I get the sense I am rambling on and on, but to anyone who is having trouble writing lyrics, I would suggest writing a few joke songs, focusing not on feelings you have, just telling some random silly story. Since no one will care what it's ABOUT, it gives you a good chance to work on how it SOUNDS, which is in many ways more important. Word choice is everything. Amen.
