With the switch over to here and being busy with work and school, I haven't posted much. First a little intro. I was dissapointed in myself because over the summer I had a severe lack of inspiration and desiree to play. I usually only played 4 times a week, just jamming along to cd's which songs I already knew, hadn't learned much and somedays I just had no desiree to play (before I would play at least 2 hours a day, sometimes 3 or more.) Twards the beginning of school I was riding with a buddy at work on the way to pickup some supplies at the Comcast headquarters. He said how his family was re-doing their basement and was turning it into a gameroom and that I we should jam down there when they finish (he plays bass.) So that re-lit my fire, but its still been up and down with desiree, but its steadily building back upto what it use to be, the only problem its not at full is from lack of time, and my parents making me do things right when I'm about to setup and start playing. My dad was running for our township's commitee board so that fucked me up since that drained time as well. I also went riding with a buddy, his dad and bro and I haden't ridden that hard in a long time so I was sore for a few days. Now that everything is just about back to normal (besides work and school, and my dad won the election) I think I'm ready to get back into gear... literally and figureatively. I've been on a tone quest since early september, the only thing keeping me from binging on expensive gear is the POD, Guitar Port, and my mom's control over my bank account (which has a pretty penny in there, not to be a showoff, just a lot of working and not a lot of spending.)
Anywho, now that I got that off my chest and out of the way, I can get back on topic. I bought a Valveking Head because the tone/overdrive from my Carvin just wasn't cutting it. I played the valveking in the store and it sounded great and wasn't too pricey. After taking that home and playing though it, it sounds great on lower gains, but higher its too fizzy as opposed to that great highgain crunch that I'm after. That crunch of course reffering to tones like EVH, Zakk Wylde, Alder/Morton from L.O.G., and of course Dime. So the other day I tried out a tubescreamer and fell in love. Its a great companion with my Peavy Transtube 112, and not too shabby with my Valveking at lower gain, it gives it a nice boost, but still gets too fizzy at higher gains. So I feel I'm in the need of a tube swap and most likely switch to a 212 cab since 412 is just too much for jamming, especially since I'm not living on my own (not to mention the speakers aren't the best, Emminence Private Jack.) I'm also in the market for a good chorus, flanger, and gate, but thats much easier to decide on my own as I;ve already played through some tasty tidbits.
As for choice of tubes and speakers, theres just too damn many and its hard to be able to test run such things so I turn to you guys for help, especially that crazy canadian redneck.
Its not hard to explain $600 on an amp or $100 or so on a pedal to my mom, just not $1600 for just a head and $1200 on a cabinet, some people just don't understand its more than a noisey box that they'e seen for $50 at Target.
