First off, and most important, what kind of guitar is it? If it's something standard, like a Fender, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I'd check out Warmoth.com, since they are pretty much the main replacement parts place for things like that.

meh mines a crappy ibanez.. it has a GAX neck whatever that is... ive been contemplating between fixing this one up or getting a new guitar (which is something i have in mind for like forever)...
another reason i want a new guitar is also because im wanting one with a tremolo bridge.. so im looking at strats or whatever...mainly strats for now... but i wudn mind throwing some money in to improve my current electric...its an ibanez gax 70 with the heaviest neck in the world and also has the loosest hardware (not always a good thing being so loose)... i think im beginning to outgrow my current axe although the distortion pedal i got like a yr ago made up for its sound a little bit..
would it be easy to self install a new neck? seems like it is to me..but i know next to nothing when it comes to the technical part of guitars...
ive tried playing on maple and i quite like it..il have a look at the site u sent me Eric thanks

Sounds to me like getting a new guitar is going to be easier.
The neck swap wouldn't be too bad, but you'll still have the issues with the hardware being loose and the fixed bridge. If you like Ibanez, check out RGs on ebay...
Does the GAX have a square heel or the AANJ (Contoured) heel?

not sure abt the neck thing but im assuming its a square one with 4 bolts...
ive been looking at strats as well... dont think im much of an ibanez person but then again i dont know enough abt ibanez to form an opinion really..im not into metal thats for sure so i thought it wudn be appropriate to get an ibanez.. but thats just my generalisation of ibanez...i got mine out of impulsivenesss...
any suggestions?

Strat! but then, I'm an ibanez hater, so don't listen to me.

Do you mean it's too heavy as in when you let go of the neck, the neck tilts down towards the floor?
If that's the case, I doubt a new neck would solve your problem. Sounds like the body is actually too light.
You could always drill some holes in the body and insert some lead to add weight. ;D

good point, i never thought of the body being too light...yeah the neck tilts down from the weight its annoying...
i also like the idea of adding lead to the body haha

I used to have a cheap Ibanez 7-string and the body was made of some really light wood....I had the same problem with it.
I never drilled any holes to fill with lead, although I almost did. I eventually just sold it b/c my hands are too small for a 7 string.
You could also tie a heavy string to the strap button that's on the bridge side of the body and tie a brick to the other end of the string. It'll limit your movement, but will strike up some conversations... ;D

I don't have anything new to add to the conversation, other than just saying that I really hate neck heavy guitars. That's the main reason that I sold that Schecter Blackjack I had. It wasn't bad neck heavy, but it was more than I was willing to deal with. The placement of the neck pickup just didn't do it for me either. I'll stop there before I get too much more off topic
