I recently sent Jon a PM congratulating him on GT's 10 year anniversary... Here is the reply that I received:
Eric,
It's great to hear from you. Thanks!
I checked out your site using the "where I am now" link. What a lot of familiar names. Interesting!
Having seen that, I had an idea. I want to propose something to you, and I won't be surprised if you say no, but I hope you will at least consider it.
I have a domain name:
guitarforums.com
Sometime during this year I want to make that site. It would be just a forum, nothing else. Just a place for people to talk about guitar.
The reason why I want to make this site: google. The way google works is the more sites that link to you, the more important google thinks you are. So if I can successfully make this guitarforums.com site, I can have a link to guitartricks.com, pianotricks.com, etc on it, and google will count this as a "vote" for my sites.
One of the reasons I have been putting it off, is I don't want to run the forum, and I haven't thought of anyone to run it.
The reason why you might want to say yes: google. The first thing I would do is link guitarforums.com on all my sites. Google will wait about six months, and then start to give that site good position because my sites say it is a good place for guitar forums. You would get a lot more traffic than you do now.
I wouldn't care how you ran the site at all, ever. You could manage it any way you want. I would install whatever forum s/w you want and take care of the hosting.
Let me know if you are at all interested.
Jon

My reply:
That is an interesting proposal. I do have a question... What about content? We're a little bit more relaxed over at the Pub. Language and subject matter aren't nearly as big a deal as they are on GT. That is why we have a "parental warning" in the >rules<.
Let me know what your thoughts on this are, and I will discuss it with the members of the Pub to see how they feel about it.

His reply:
Thanks for considering it.
You would have complete control over content/profanity/rules. It's your call. I would have no say in the way the forum is run.
I think this is a good partnership.
If I go do my own thing, it might actually fail for lack of participation. With you guys, I know it won't fail.
With my help, your forum will gain popularity faster than it would have otherwise.
Let me know.

So, what do you all think? I can definitely see the pros of this, and can really only think of one con... More traffic = more members = more moderation. However, I don't see this as being that big of a problem, because more traffic = more members = more content.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you want to become larger (on our own terms), or do you want to stay small and cozy like we are now?
