I think its because money talks.. you won't see anthing else happen. There is just too much money involved... so when anything/anyone threatens the livelihood of the oil industry.. Money is thrown around to buy people off.. when you are talking billions and billions of dollars - what else can compete?
Politicians are financed by it so significantly that it would not be in there best interest to go against them. I really feel the US and the World is that corrupt. Its just too much money for any one person or country to go against. People are dying because of it... and I don't expect that will stop anytime soon.
It will only stop or change once people stop buying the oil/gas because they can't afford to...and the oil companies start falling from their projections.. Until then - they are making money and the more they seem to charge - and the people are still willing to pay...

Things look a bit different a year later, eh?
Here in Alberta, we have drilling rigs sitting idle, oil sands projects being scaled back or cancelled, Oil & Gas industry layoffs affecting every level from rig-pigs to engineers, and real estate prices starting to crash.
And I'm paying about CDN$0.82 per litre of Regular gasoline. About US$3.70/USgallon, I think. BeaverBuck parity with the US dollar is long gone.
How's things with the rest of you?
