Ok, I've got a question pertaining to this jamming stuff. Recently I quit my band as well, and found some others to jam with, one of which is a good friend. Jams sound great and everything falls into place. Problem is whenever we try to make a song out of stuff it just falls into a state of stupor. I've never jammed before and work best alone, but I'd rather not exclude the others out of their share of duty. So tell me, what is it that you look for to come out of jams? I'm similar to you, in that I work better on my on. I suck at trying to come up with new material when jamming with other people. However, if they already have an arrangement of a song, then I can jam to that by adding my own style to it. Whenever writing a song, while in a band, I'll usually come up with a couple of riffs and present them to the band to see if we can collectively write more material for the riffs. This usually doesn't work too well, so I just end up playing with the riffs on my own time until I can come up with more structure. Once they somewhat resemble a song, then it's easier to work on them as a band.

That's a shame about the band but you gotta do what you gotta do. I find it immensely annoying when other people waste my time. My current band is playing the stuff I write by myself, but sometimes we do jam around and in general it sounds pretty good; I think a lot of it depends on the musicians you're jamming with.

Yeah, my jams sound great overall, but the rhythm guitarist is a tad linear in what he can do and what he does with what he can do. So in other words we get consistent 8th note, power chord driven chord progression and I try for dear God to not make it sound the same after 10 minutes.

Imo, you guys don't suck at working with others, you just haven't found a group that you can vibe off each other.

Imo, you guys don't suck at working with others, you just haven't found a group that you can vibe off each other. I've only played with one guitarist and one drummer that I could really vibe off of, and meshed well with. Unfortunately, they're both back in Ms.
