My laptop died the other day (gets stuck at the windoze startup screen and won't do anything), so until I get it sorted out, I won't be on as often as normal.
It had been on for a couple of days, and we had been trying to convert a movie to get ready to play on a PSP and then, the next time I went to get on the computer, everything was frozen... then all of a sudden the screen went black with these verticle orange lines, and then I had to manually turn it off. After that, it wouldn't even turn on, and then after a while, I was able to get it to turn on, but it would get frozen at the windoze logo screen. it also gets frozen when trying to start it in safe mode. No idea what I'm going to do about it, but it is quite infuriating!

Is it at all possible to do a complete reboot of the system and go back to square one?

Well... he couldn't even get it to boot up in safe mode so I gave him a copy of my home edition XP to see if he could at least get it to boot up and do a repair. However when we went in the repair module - it kept saying the password was not right... So something corrupted somewhere... so he tried a repair install to see if that would work.
He got it to boot up and right now he is just trying to salvage all of his files and get them off of it. He looks like he lost every single driver - none of the USBs seem to work or anything. And some of the files have locked him out saying he doesn't have permission to get into them. However the majority of them he can see...
Not sure what the problem was to start with and once he gets everything off of it he can - he'll start to mess around with it.... It still doesn't seem very stable so he's not going to push his luck.. just save what he can.

Looks like your going to have to get a new harddrive and install Xp on it. What kinda virus software were you using?

I've been using Trend Micro PCcillan for antivirus software.
I pretty much have all the files that I really care about off this damn computer now, so I'm just concidering all of my options at the moment. I'm most likely going to end up trying to format it and install Linux. Once I can get a job, I'll be looking into getting me and Tonja a good computer, but until then, I've got to do what I can with what I've got.

Yeah, something happened with my Armada laptop a few months ago. I would turn it on, and it would not even load up the the log in window. I would restart it over and over, and sometimes the login screne would appear. It was really annoying, since I had a lot of music software I had recently installed, not to mention it was the computer that I would write papers and such on. I still have it, though maybe for not much longer... So I guess I'm empathetic to your plea, Eric.

Mabey your pc was allergic to Pccellin. How old was the laptop? The harddrive could have just crashed from hardware failure, Trend Micro is a pretty good antivirus software.

The laptop is just over a year old now. I have no idea what has caused the problem, but I'm running Linux fine. I still have some issues with my hardware though.

I still have some issues with my hardware though. How is Tonja dealing with it? They have pills for that now. But remember, if your hardware works for more than 4 hours, call your IT tech.

That's funny right there!
I usually don't admit this in public (especially in forums since folks have my email) but I consider you bitches friends, soooo...
Hi, my name is Scott (dramatic pause) and I'm an IT Mgr. Been doing it for almost 15 years now, so post away your questions and I'll do my darndest to help ya out.
Caveat: I've been in "management" for the last 8 years and was doing network architecture/systems administration for 4 years before that, so I haven't had to troubleshoot a desktop in quite some time. Having said that, I still supervise 5 great desktop technicians so if I get stuck (God forbid) I have pretty good faith that I can still help ya out.
Also, if I tell you to do something and you do it just like I tell you to and it further screws up your computer, I accept no responsibility. ;P

Unfortunately, I can't really do anything until I can get windoze back on here. After I do that, there's a few tricks I have up my sleeve. However, if those don't work, it'll pretty much let me know that it's a hardware failure... and then I'll just be pissed.
