I bought an iPod a couple weeks ago, pretty much on a whim. I was gonna get an 8 GB Nano for $200 until I realized how dumb that was when I could get an 80 GB one for $260.
As you may or may not know, you can use iPods on computers that run with Mac or Windows, but you can't go back and forth between the two. If you initially use it on a Mac and you want to use it on a Windows, you have to reformat it, which means all your crap on there will be erased.
I have two computers, a desktop PC with Windows XP (whoa, that rhymed), and an old iBook my aunt gave me. My laptop has very little storage room, so it would have taken forever to copy my CDs onto my iPod using it. I was all set to use my PC for this task when I discovered my CD drive is buggered and when it copies CDs, the songs come out all skippy and horrible.
I was pretty upset until I remembered that my friend Skyler already had like 85% of my CDs copied to his Mac out in Inwood. So I patiently waited a week until I was able to make it out there. He copied the CDs he didn't have to his computer and we stuck 'em all on the iPod. Problem solved.
The thing is, I am bound to buy more albums and download random songs, and driving an hour to put them on my iPod is outrageous. "No problem," said Skyler. "Just put anything new you get on your laptop and it'll be fine."
But of course it was not. I plugged my iPod into it and got a "Your iTunes version is too old" message. In order to download a newer iTunes, I needed the internet. And as I think I mentioned, my laptop is old and fairly crappy, and as a result the wireless capabilities are all shot to shit.
Eventually I did manage to hook it up with an ethernet cable and crack all these mysterious codes my uncle had left behind and got onto the net. So I downloaded the newest iTunes (three separate times, I should add, because the Apple site wasn't working for me and the first two mirrors were duds). At this point, I went to bed, because it was 2:30 and I had class at 8:30.
Once I got back from school today, I plugged the iPod in and this time got a "Your iPod needs Mac OS 10.4.8 and you have 10.3.9. Get with the times, sucka." message.
So yes. Moral of the story: Don't buy an iPod unless you have stuff that isn't shit.

I still can't understand why people spend so much money on these things, when you can get something similar for 1/4 the price, that is just as good if not better. Plus, once the battery goes bad on an ipod (and it will), there's no replacing it, you have to buy a whole new ipod.

And also, I do believe there is some sort of warranty thing where you can send it away and they'll change the battery/send you a new one free of charge (other than shipping). I could be wrong, but that's what I heard.

You can replace the battery, theres a lot of places online that sell them and show you how to do it. I pod definatly has everyone in storage space, but I do think that 120gb is a lot. No one needs to carry that much media, if you do, get a real removable hdd. I have the 30 gig, though I will get the 80 once I fill it up (no movies or pics, just music.) It beats having to skim through cd's ( I also rip at high bitrate to keep most of the quality.)
If I was in your situation, I would have just got a new CD Drive, you can get em cheap and they're easy to install. As for the new itunes, the cd that came with it wasn't up to date??? What is that shit?

CD that came with what? My iPod didn't come with any CD.
And besides, I downloaded the new iTunes off Apple's site. Now the problem is that my Mac is version 10.3.9 and the iPod needs at least a 10.4.8.

Aren't the Ipod's suppose to come with a cd so you can install iTunes? Like you said, what if you don't have internet on your computer. Unless you didn't look through the whole box. My brother got one a month or two ago and his came with the cd as well.

I just have the 4 gig Ipod Nano, got it for Christmas. 4 gigs is plenty for me, gives me about 20 hours or so worth of music. I just swap out albums from time to time.
Mine didn't come with a c.d. either, just the ipod and the USB cable. I had to go online and download Itunes also.
And yes, the battery can be changed.

There are a bunch of really simple solutions to all this. Go hangout at iPodlounge.com. Its a bit geeky but full of useful Podary
To take songs off the itunes partition of an iPod don't use itunes, it wont work. If you are using a PC use X-play and if you are using a Mac use Podworks. They both cost about 20 bucks and work flawlessly.
If you are going to go between a PC and a Mac you need to format the iPod for a PC and the mac will deal with it.
Now the tunes.
Copy them from your friends computer on the iPod not via iTunes but instead use the iPod as a hard disk.
Then copy them onto the computer you want to use as HQ and stick em in the library. However before you import them into the library using "file" "add to playlist" go to "preferences" and stop iTunes from organizing your library as this will duplicate all your songs.
I have also had new batteries for two iPods now (we have 6 between us). If you go to apples website look up "battery replacement program" and it will tell you all about it.

well call me misinformed then. Either way, I still can't justify the price, when there's similar products that would suit my needs better, and for a much more reasonable price.

it depends what you want it for.
I like having a 160 gb disk that doubles as an MP3 player. If I'm off round the UK it is great to have a bucket load of music / movies to tune out the journey !
Or an 8GB video ipod that I can use surf the web, check my email and phone people up with as well as keeping all my contacts and diary in the same place.
However for me the best bit is, especially with the iPhone that it is just fun to use !

So.
I was listening to my iPod on the bus today, just like any other day, when the sound died. It was a song I'd never heard before, so I gave it a few seconds, thinking maybe it was just over. When a new song didn't come up, I took out the iPod, turned off the Hold switch, and pressed skip. The display changed to show a new song, but the new song didn't play. I unplugged the headphones and plugged them back in, but still nothing. I flicked the Hold switch back and forth, but still nothing. The display said the song was on pause, but when I pressed play there was still no sound. The symbol changed to play, it just wouldn't actually play.
I live in Manitoba, and today was ridiculously cold. I figured maybe the cold weather was screwing things up, so I just turned it off. Once I got home and let it warm up for a few minutes, I tried again, but now it won't even turn on. I've tried resetting it, but that does nothing. I've plugged it into my computer, and the display still remains totally black. The computer recognizes that something's been plugged in, just not that it's an iPod, like it usually does.
Does anybody know what's going on with it now? I'm looking your direction, Doc.

Mine once totally quit on me... I was about to send it back to Apple (I had extended Applecare, so it would have been covered) but after a few days (long enough for its battery to bleed down) I plugged it back in to my computer just for sh¡ts and giggles and it started back up normally and has been fine ever since.
Actually, the battery is trash now but my iPod is friggin' ancient so it's to be expected.
The point is [especially if you don't have Applecare], give it a few days for the battery to bleed down and for everything to chill out and then see what happens.
If it's new or if you have Applecare, then start looking up everything you need for turning it back in to Apple because they're VERY good about fixing or replacing their products when they're defective.

Good advice, Rask. I just plugged mine in again to see, and now it seems to be charging. Thank you.

iPods don't like cold. I keep mine in an inside pocket if it is cold.
Following Rasks advice is a good pace to start and also have another go at resetting (this is different form just turning it off and on again), this will not wipe the songs. If that doesn't work make sure it is still under warranty and send it back to Apple
