Hello all - I have a question for you. In another month and a half or so, I will be celebrating my 47th b'day. To honor such an occasion, I plan on buying a new guitar. My budget is around $450 or so. I have narrowed my choices down to a Mexican Strat or an Epihone Les Paul Standard.
The online reviews seem to be good overall for the Strat but there are a handful of negatives. The Epi seems to fair pretty well.
You guys know me and that I am a blues / blues rock kinda guy. The prevailing wisdom says to go with the Strat but I am not sure. Since I have some time to decide, I thought I would pickyour brains. What do you think?

Either one of those guitars would get you some very nice blues tones. Here are my suggestions... Listen to a lot of the music that you like, and will be playing, and look up what kind of guitar the artist mainly uses. Use your ears to let you know which one you like best. Also, if there's a music store near that carries both guitars, go play on them both to see which one feels best in your hands. I love how Strats sound, but they just don't feel right to me. I also prefer the humbucker sound over the single coil sound. So, I tend to go for the PRS and Gibson style guitars. Another option would be to look at a Tele. You almost get the best of both worlds with a Tele. Mine is one of the newer ones with the hotter pickups, and it can get some very thick humbuckerish tones, and can also get some nice glassy single coil tones. It's definitely no Strat or LP, but you can coax similar tones out of it. With new pickups, you can get even closer to whichever one you prefer (Strat or LP). With a Tele, though, you definitely learn to appreciate the tone knob. It is a very important part of a Tele. Anymore questions, or needed suggestions, or opinions, or help on finding out what guitar a certain guitarist plays, feel free to pick our brains some more

Thanks man. Good advice for sure. I hadn't even considered a Tele. If I have time, I am going over to GuitarCenter tomorrow and play around with all three and see what sounds/feels right to me.
I know Albert Collins played a Tele and had a killer sound. BB King and a host of other blues guys play the Gibson ES-335 (I don't have that kind of cash!) which has a similar sound to the Epiphone. But most tend to go with the Strat (I think); SRV, Clapton and I think Hendrix played one as well.
Argh, the choices one has to make! ; )
Thanks again. Good advice.

So simple. I'm ashamed I didn't think of that! ;D Believe me man, like all of us six-string junkies, if I had the cash, my house would be overflowing with guitars and related stuff. Heck, after this one I have start saving for a nice tube amp set up, a resonator, some effects and either a Martin or a Taylor acoustic. You know, I think building models would have been a cheaper hobby - not nearly as entertaining though...

Personally (can't stress that enough), I'd go with the mexi-strat, a good one that is.
But I agree with everything Eric said.
