I'm experiencing problems with my amp. I keep getting these intermittent volume drops often accompanied by a crackling type of sound. I've narrowed it down to the amp (i.e. it's not a faulty cable, guitar electronics etc) but does anyone know what it could be? I've recorded 3 sound clips. The first was using the clean channel, the second using the dirty channel, and third was with no guitar, just me holding the cable end against my thumb; this one demonstrates the crackling noise. Sound clips are here: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=253063Please help.

volume drops are usually associated with bad tubes....

I'm not 100% on this, but my guess is that the power tubes are dying. Volume loss is a common symptom of dying power tubes. Hopefully LATS will chime in and give a more educated assessment.

My computer died a while ago, and my backup doesn't have a sound card, so I can't hear your clips. No matter, do the simple thing first.
I assume that since you recorded both channels, the problems occur on both channels. As mentioned by brother zozo, this implicates something common to both channels, like the power tubes, or possibly the phase-inverter tube that drives them. Power tubes take a beating, especially from people who crank their amps and run 'em hard, so they're likely suspects. If you have spares, swap 'em out. You do have spares, don't you?
Your amp may also act as you describe if the rectifier is failing. This will sound super-fuzzy as the volume drops.

Ironically enough I was going to buy a spare set of tubes when I get my student loan through on Monday. I'm not getting any super fuzziness as such, just intermittent crackling. My best bet is to stick some new power tubes in then you reckon?

Put some new power tubes in, have the bias set correctly, and then come back and tell us how much more balls your amp has

Small update: Tried the amp in the different power modes (triode vs. pentode) and the problem was still there. However, the distortion channel seems to be fine now where as the clean channel is still playing up. Any ideas?

Nevermind, it's still screwing doing it. There's a new soundclip up to demonstrate what it started doing to me: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=253063Add that to the fact that I can't use Logic for 2 minutes without it crashing and this is turning out to be a bad evening.

Seems like Watford valves aren't stocking any JJ EL34's.

Oddly enough my amp worked fine all day today apart from a small 4 second hic-cup. I'm really baffled. Still want some valves though.
