Oh yes, compression.
A few years ago I would have never been so picky about it, but now I am.
I've been through several compression pedals.
I started with the Marshall "Ed" the compressor, great first compressor, and great bang for the buck at only £30-40. However the settings seemed to lack much scope and it got prety noisy pretty fast.
So I moved on to the MXR Dyna Comp. In hindsight I don't see why they get so much praise, maybe because I had a new one and not an old one, but still. Very noisy and coloured the tone in a way that I wasn't too enthused with. (However the tone colouring issue is one that some people actualy like).
Then I moved onto the Keeley Compressor: wow! Great sounding, low noise compressor, couldn't be happier. A tad expensive though, at £170, but a really great quality pedal.
So anyway, what's everyones thoughts and experiences with compression?
Personally I don't like to use too much compression as i'm not overly keen on that "squashed" sound, I like to use just enough to even out my clean playing and legato but without losing the overal dynamics.

I only use compression on Bass. I might use it on a clean setting sometimes, but rarely. I can never set the compression so that it doesn't hurt my dynamics. Probably just because I don't use it enough to know how to properly set it.

I never really used compression, until a couple months ago when my friend handed me a compression sustainer from BOSS and said happy early birthday. I use it when playing clean, because I like that tight sound....sometimes, and I sometimes even use it for distortion.
But overall, I could live without it, but it's a cool little addition to my board.

I used a behringer compressor for a while which was great bang for buck at £15, didn't colour my tone and was surprisingly quiet, i'm gettin me a Vox snake charmer compressor soon to add a little valve warmth to my little solid state Vox Pathfinder practice amp.

Nice! Please let us know what it's like.

I too have the MXR Dyna-Comp----it cuts the highs severely--not happy with it.
