What's your personal favorite, and why?
At the moment, my personal favorite overdrive pedal is a Diamond J-Drive MK3. It's an overdrive pedal, plus a clean boost. The overdrive is very thick. This is partly due to the fact that it almost has a layered sound. It almost sounds like the straight clean guitar signal is getting through, and then the overdrive signal is getting layered on top of the clean guitar (like playing through a clean and an overdriven amp at the same time). The tone/warmth knob is unique. When turned counter clockwise, the mids start to become scooped, and the tone gets brighter. When turned clockwise, the mids get boosted, and the highs are rolled off a bit. I personally like it between 11-1 o'clock. There's also a bright switch, which gives you a bit more presence. The clean boost does exactly what it's supposed to do, and does it very well. Diamond is a boutique pedal company, located here in Halifax, so the prices are fairly high. I think it's worth it, for what you get.
I've also got an MXR ZW-44 Wylde overdrive and a Carl Martin PlexiTone in my arsenal. I use the ZW for when I want to boost the overdrive channel of my amp for a tighter hi-gain tone more suitable for metal. I used to use it for several other things, but after getting the J-Drive, this is all I use the ZW for now. The PlexiTone is an awesome pedal, but it doesn't get used much at all right now. It is very picky about the amp that it's being played through, and prefers British voiced amps, and lots of volume.
I'll eventually get some soundclips up when I'm able. Got too much going on right now, and not enough room to properly record in. Soon though
