...to start a thread like this. Who's your current favourite artists/bands, and why? For me: Joe Satriani: Amazing musician, writes tunes everyone can appreciate, even non-guitar players. Steve Vai: Weird, overly extravagant, but so damn good! Iron Maiden: Feel teh p0wa. Van Halen: Only just got into these, partly from Eric's recommendation. Got their first album and listened to it 6 times in 3 days, need I say more? So how about you lot?

Shnikes. Toughy.
I'd have to say at the moment:
Tommy Emmanuel. Absolutely amazing acoustic player and has written some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I ordered his album "Only" last night along with the tab book to match.
Other than that, I haven't really been listening to all that much lately. Same old stuff.

I got Only the other year, it was the first time I'd delved into any acoustic stuff and I was really blown away. Terrific musician.

Well...
Radiohead: I'm going through a phase. I've listened to there newer stuff, but I'm obsessed with Pablo Honey.
Zeppelin: Do I need to explain?
Pink Floyd: I love the early spacey hippie rock, to The Wall, to the Division Bell. It's got it all, orchestras, big electric power chords, you name it.
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Sure It's what everyone's into, but how can you not like it? There 80's funk is...well, funky. And There stuff throughout the 90s was good too. I even like there newer cds.

I like their earlier stuff, wasn't overly enthused by the stuff before the latest album, however their latest album seems to be a "return to their roots" sort of thing, I really like it.

Nirvana - purely because they got me into rock, way back when.
Led Zeppelin - because Jimmy Page gives me a chubby.
Sonic Youth - I love both sides of their music: the noisy freakouts and the beautiful gentle stuff.
The Beatles - the friggin' Beatles, man. Come on.
The White Stripes - I love how rough around the edges they are, all gritty and sort of gross. Jack White is a pretty good songwriter, and their latest album "Icky Thump" already has a place in history as the soundtrack to my youth.
I'm also on a RATM kick at the moment, but I wouldn't say they're one of my all-time favourites.

Van Halen will always be one of my favorite bands (and guitarists), and that includes both the Roth and Hagar years. I actually haven't been listening to much music here lately , so, I can't really say what I'm into at the moment.

yargh, a tough one.
Pink Floyd has been my favorite band forever- however my music selection is somewhat seasonal.
for example, in the fall and winter, I'm really into Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, etc.
as spring approaches, it comes off the metal more into primarily Pink Floyd and stuff like Queen, the Flaming Lips, Simon and Garfunkel or the Byrds.
then summer is here, and I'm listening to mostly just Bob Marley, UB40, the Dead, Umphrey's McGee, Phish, and the Disco Biscuits.
...so yeah....

Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, Children of Bodom and Hendrix are probably my all time favorites. They're the only bands in which I like all their cd's start to finish. The only time I ever skip through one of their songs is if I'm jamming along getting warmed up and I didn't learn the song.

Yngwie is my favorite guitarist because he's got such an ego. He's awesome and he knows it.

I'm going to get bashed for this and I don't care: My favorite band is Staind. My wife says I'm gay for them. I think it's because my musical taste matured right along with their music. Their early stuff was pure metal; angry, I hate you and everyone else metal. Then he (Aaron) meets his wife and makes a load of money and has nothing else to be angry about so Staind's music changes a lot. Now he's a happy go lucky stoner that's only angst is pointed at the music industry. Sure, the guitar playing may not rival EVH, but the music rocks.
Oh, and I also really like AIC, RATM and A Perfect Circle... and Tool and....

Hmmm, well I'm still exploring the flamenco and classical genres, with Johannes Linstead still topping out as a current favorite. Although I'm not totally into full symphonies by themselves, I do love a good guitar concerto...Concierto de Aranjuez is certainly one of the best. While the 1st and 3rd movements are nice and lively, that 2nd adagio movement is really emotional (composer said to have been expressing devastation of losing 1st baby in miscarriage). And about a month ago I finally got Schmange's Phase IV...sure not everything on there does it for me (being that I'm generally not into techno), but some songs are great!

I'm also on a RATM kick at the moment, but I wouldn't say they're one of my all-time favourites. Ahh RATM, they got me into music. Same here - and they got me into politics, too Interested in politics, that is, not actually a politician! Awesome to see so many Floyd mentions, of course... Brendon, I am indebted to you for the Sonic Youth, I'm still discovering them and steadily falling in love with them. For me, Pink Floyd is a constant favourite, same as Mr. Shaffer Flavours of the month... -The Rolling Stones: yeah, they're classic and everyone knows them, but there's a reason for that. I didn't realise until recently how brilliant they were as songwriters, musicians and performers. Check 'em out if you haven't yet! -The Moody Blues: another constant favourite, but I'm really big on them now especially. Just epic. -Stevie Wonder: Songwriter and keyboardist extraordinaire, and he can sing like no-one else as well. Underappreciated, but incredibly influential and sometimes ripped off. -Public Enemy: I'm starting to get into rap and hip-hop, and these guys are my favourite at the moment. Some really excellent lyrics and grooves, and not your average rap combo by any means. -Jason Becker: I rarely ever listen to music just because it has great guitar playing in it, but I can't help it with this guy. The word "genius" doesn't do him justice. But I only like his solo stuff - I steer clear of most of the Cacophony and Roth stuff, because I'm an eighties-rock-o-phobe And, now that I'm in a metal band, there's a fair bit of metal that my bandmates have got me big on and that I've stumbled across... -Judas Priest: Bloody brilliant, cut-and-thrust metal. I order all metalheads to listen and listen well. -Motorhead: ditto -Iced Earth -Mastodon -Suicidal Tendencies: Terrible lead guitar tone , but other than that, a great band -Venom: hilarious and terrifying at the same time! Jeez, what a mammoth post...

Whew. Tough call. There are a number of bands and/or musicians that I really enjoy but most of the stuff I would classify as favorites are long gone...but let's start with those still around:
1) Dylan - can't sing for squat but the man can write a song.
2) Brian Setzer - oh yeah, I am rockabilly/blues ho.
3) B.B. King - C'mon, he's a legend. And for an old dude he can put on a show.
4) Clapton - see #3 for the reasons.
5) Springsteen - it's just good ol' fashioned rock and roll. Girls, fast cars, leather jackets...
6) Buddy Guy - until you've seen him live, it's hard to explain.
7) Kenny Wayne Shepherd / Johnny Lang - amazing guitarist for their ages and experience. I look forward to long careers for both.
8) Joe Bonnamassa - just incredible.
(oh I could go on but I'll stop...)
and for the dead ones:
1) Blind Lemon Jefferson
2) Lightning Hopkins
3) Muddy Waters
4) Howlin' Wolf
5) Robert Johnson
6) Son House
7) Albert Collins
8) Albert and Freddie King
9) Magic Sam....
(Again, I could go on and on...)
Whew. That was long and unnecessary (okay, stop it. No jokes...)

I'm having a DeVotchKa high right now. They've got roots in romani, greek, slavic, and mariachi music, with elements of punk.
Um... Right now?
