Havoc Din is finally in the process of recording our debut album...We got 14 drums tracks completed 2 weeks ago. It'll be a few months, but I can't wait for you all to hear it....If anyone has heard of the metal band Nile, we are working with the same engineer at the same studio that they use...
And since our last DVD shoot failed (audio sucked), we're planning a new filming on Jan. 12th....gonna have 6 camera's this time instead of 2, and we're also having a professional come out and record the audio....
And check out the write up that appeared in the local entertainment magazine promoting our show on Nov. 9th...
"Ladies and gentlemen! All eyes and ears on the main stage at Headliners for an exhibition of Columbia’s musical heavyweights! Chaos! Guitar riffs galore! Drum solos! The aptly named Havoc Din brings the noise a la Corrosion of Conformity or Pantera. It’s more din than you’d think four guys capable of — and that’s a good thing. Suhgarim throws a female-fronted twist into the proceedings with Lacuna Coil-style ear candy. Pretty loud. And Pagan Savant steps on the distortion pedals and floors it for a Zakk Wylde-style joyride. Grab your lighters, dress in black and rock out with the hometown heavies." J. Cataldo

I wish the audio turned out on the first DVD attempt, the video was great....the next try will be much better since there will be more camera's and a pro recording the audio....uh, sorry to repeat myself there...
Anyway, Jersey might not be too far off Bro.....Possibly mid to late 2008....Nile is a badass band, they are from SC as well, Greenville I believe....
Okay, I need all of your input....I personally want to make a killer album with layers and layers of guitar, but with what I want to do, we'd never be able to pull it off live...
Should we go all out and record an album we can't play exactly like it is live? i.e., acoustics in the background on 2 songs, little background noises in certain spots (such as whammy bar tricks), doubling my own solos where each track plays the same solo, then they break apart with some harmonizing, then come back together, etc......
Or should we go the route that we record the songs exactly the way we play 'em live?

1st.....Congrats
2nd....I don't presonally like it when songs can't be performed live as on the album. What I suggest is to scratch record it the way you want, but then go back and pare it back. It's alot of extra work but in my opinion worth it in the end.
3rd....Either way you decide to go, best of luck to ya.

I personally don't mind if the album version of a song isn't exactly like the live version, as long as how it's played live doesn't take anything away from the overall feel of the song. I wouldn't go overboard though. I personally try not to write anything that can't be played (or approximated) with 2 guitars. Keeps it simple that way.
Do whatever you think is best for the song, just keep playing it live in the back of your mind. That way, you won't add anything that will take away from the song when/if you have to leave it out during a live performance.

Personally I think the studio recording comes before the live performance. When people have your cd they can only listen to it, not see it, but when they see you live, there's the added visual impact which allows you extra space in terms of arrangement, if that makes sense. I guess part of the fun would be figuring out how to play it live. This is something I like to see when I see bands play live - seeing how they alter the tracks for live performance.
Although this does run the chance of going horribly wrong live, so maybe it's best to strike some sort of middle ground.
Either way, good luck in the studio and with the live filming - I look forward to hearing and seeing how it goes!

Thanks for all the input...
I'm not talking about going all crazy or anything and overdoing it with the recording....just layering a few extra things on a few songs...I don't think what I have in mind will affect the live version of the songs.....our live show has a lot of improvising anyway, most songs aren't played live the same way twice....

Well, take Pantera for instance, Dime layered and doubled (harmonies) a lot of stuff for the albums, then just had himself playing everything live and even though I never saw them live, from the DVD's they kicked ass. I geuss its just a matter of how much layering you plan on doing, just as long, like Eric said, the live show doesn't take away from the cd. Also as Zakk once said, "If you wanna hear the song from the album, then go listen to the album."

I had the pleasure of seeing Pantera live back in the mid 90's. They were awesome live.....
I gotta agree with the Zakk quote....To me, a live show is a live show and a recording is a recording....I don't necessarily want to hear a band play the songs from an album exactly note for note like they are on the album.... Hendrix is another example of that...

I think that's why I enjoy listening to live recordings of songs so much. I always find it interesting to hear how a band interprets their own songs.

Sweet, thanks again for the responses....I'm going ahead with what I had planned for the recordings. The other guys in the band also agree that we should layer things and create an album rather than a great recording of us playing live....

Well, I went in yesterday and recorded my rhythm tracks on 6 of the songs......next is to record the rhythm on the remaining 8 songs, then onto solos and vocals....
Getting a really killer tone with my Marshall and LP. We ended up using my ZW Overdrive in front of the amp. The pedal itself still works, but still need to replace the switch. The switch isn't reliable, but when I get it to turn on, it stays on....gonna see about fixing that switch this week sometime...

Sweet! I really like the tone of the ZW overdrive, but it's just not reliable enough to keep it on my board

Yeah, the sound engineer at the studio we are recording at loved it and was asking all about that pedal, he had never worked with one. I warned him about the quality though, which he saw how the switch would act up...
