So for the last 8 or so months my playing has been pretty mundane. I've only just realized this and I now know I need something new that will give me a bit more discipline (is that right?) with my practicing. As in, I have'nt even learned a song in that much time though I know I am absolutely capable of doing so. That certain something just so happens to a band. My happens to know someone who's son is an avid drummer, and along with his bassist buddy are looking for a capable guitarist. They're pretty frustrated with the cliched guitarists; those who only know G, C, D and thier Nirvana licks. I know myself to be a very capable guitarist, though what I really lack is dedication and, again, discipline. I think that this might really help me get on track. I know my fair share of theory, though it must improve, and my reading skills are'nt so bad. I think that being in a band will really breathe new life into my playing and will enlighten me in a lot of ways, on what I've got to improve upon... I've got experience gigging and that's always an epiphany waiting to happen.
So I just might be going out for my first "audition" soon, hopefully playing with these two dudes. In search for advice in these things, I'm asking more seasoned musicians for advice, because my inexperience with playing (and jamming) with people happens to be a huge disadvantage for me.
So, can any of my GP hit me up with certain advice on how I should prepare myself... Not so much as in what it'll be like, becuase there's no way in helping me with that. Thanks for aaaaaaaaaaaaany sorta response...
post script-I almost feel like a fledgling leaving the nest.

Prepare? Bah...unless they named a few cover tunes, you'll just be winging it mostly anyways. So I dunno, maybe you could do the ole play with whatever comes on the radio challenge? Practice-wise, there's prolly not a whole lot to do in a short time that will come naturally enough to be impressively useful in improv. Otherwise, I'll just suggest a good check through your gear Too many times I've arrived to jam only to find the longer cable I don't usually use at home now has a short in it...or 2 riffs in and a string breaks...or the battery in my pedal poops out...that sorta thing.
Keep in mind, I'm in the same boat as you...I've only been in 2 garage bands and occasionally jammed with friends/family.

I've always tried to get a list of songs from the band before I go to jam with them, and try to learn as many as I can.

Be sure to see what tuning they want to jam in....If you've always played in Standard tuning and they jam in say drop d or drop c, you'll need to be prepared for that...

I don't really use pedal points (pedal tones, whatever) that much; I don't dig metal very much. I'm just hoping that we'll just be a cover band.

Oh, well, that's simple if your gonna be doing covers...just like PRSplaya said, find out a few of the songs that ya'll be playing and just learn the songs. Play along with the album...

It was...
Fu.cking awesome. I went to his house today. Brought my Parker and my Vox Pathfinder 15 along. Plugged in and jammed for 45 minutes. Again, it was awesome. We played some of your generic punk/surf tunes and such for a while. I kinda played ad lib mostly, with chordal progressions I've written. He stayed right me. Eventually I figured I should test him, so I vamped into some smooth jazz stuff... major sevenths, minor ninths, and other augmented dookie like that. From nonchalant melodies to tumultuous power chord driven rythmns. 'Twas sweet, it was. Plus, were going to talk to this bassist he knows, hopefully eventually adding another body to the cramped living room.
I figure this will be a superb oppurtunity to start writing songs that consider other instruments... Like bridges and fills and such.
This can work...
