My dad was a high school football, power-lifting, and overall athletics coach for over 30 years until retiring just this year. Thus he was in a position to be a figure of some influence on scores of teenagers. Many keep in touch after graduation while becoming whatever they become...from pro ballers, business owners, cops, to doctors. He always has a story to tell of various feats (or follies) of his students. Yet there is one story he has told with the most awe and reverence of any other. That is the story of Marcus Luttrell, a U.S. Navy SEAL. He came and visited my dad after going MIA in Afghanistan and returning home, forever changed, but alive. Though I've never met Marcus, my brother (himself a Marine sniper) also knows him from both school and the service. Well now I got the whole story, because he just shared his account of his ordeals in his book, Lone Survivor, which I just finished.
My dad is a pretty good oral storyteller, but of course he can't do it justice...this book is without a doubt the most stirring story I've ever read, seen, or heard. It's a full emotional spectrum of human nature at it's absolute finest and worst, from heroic strength and endurance, to honor, love and faith, to brutality, loss, and hatred. More than anything, it's a tribute to his fallen friends. Sure it may have had slightly more impact on me, being as it hits particularly "close to home", but don't take my word for it. It's the #1 NY Times Bestseller.
