Ok, so I tap with my middle finger whilst holding my pick between the first finger and the thumb, ala Vai.
The problem I get it is, when I move my right palm across or up the strings as I am tapping, often you can hear the "scratching", is there any way to resolve this?

I find it helps to put your fretting hand thumb on the side of the neck - sort on the edge of the 12th fret if you were going to tap the 9th. You don't want to anchor it, but I find putting my thimb there makes my hand more arched.
Seems to work, and I tap with my middle finger too....

The hard part seems to be tucking the pick in under the first finger and then transferring between the two positions mentioned in this thread, as sometime you need to pick a note before tapping.

I sometimes use my right hand to mute the other strings while tapping if I;m tapping on the first few strings, but when I do move my hand around, the scratching or screeching is never overpowering or heard for that matter. I'd have to stop playing to hear it. Perhaps your using to much gain or compression making is easily audible.

Having re-read.... I hold my pick a little differently to you while tapping. In that situation, I'd pick the note,, and then the pick gets flipped into the first joint of my index finger and I just 'pinch' it in place - then your thumb is free... Good point on the gain / compression though, and also - tried a noisegate? I know it's cheating but I'd be screwed without mine...

I use a hairband around the first fret it stops all that unwanted noise you get from moving up along the strings so you dont really have to worry about muting the strings with the palm of your hand plus my girlfriend is convinced I'm having an affair with my guitar because I refer to it as "she" and now it has a hairband on it ;D

Well then only way to get this is to practice very slow making adjustments as you ascend or descend so as not to make any unwanted string noise and when you are in a situation where you are playing live you wont really be worried too much as the unwanted noise wont realy be noticed by the audience .. unless I'm there

I use a hairband when I'm tapping with both hands... only a problem for open strings. The one I use is black, and you can't see it against a rosewood 'board.
Being a purist is great man, but like Billy said, you can't hear all that stuff when you're in a band situation so while it's great to aim for perfection, don't sweat it too much.
I have my noisegate low, otherwise I lose things I want to keep. It just takes the edge off, and is a little more forgiving. It's not magic though..

I always hold my pick with my thumb and middle finger. I'll try it your way sometime today and see if I can find a solution to the pick noise.

OK I suck at tapping but the Hair band thing is so F-in cheating it's ridiculous. It's also the best idea I have ever heard. I'm so on that it's not funny. For now on it's amp, guitar, pick, slide and hair band. My new gear.

When I 8 finge tap, I usually slide my plectrum up my pointer finger with my thumb, so that's it's resting on my first joint of that finger, being held in place with my thumb. Here's a vid I found with Niels Vejlyt, though it's not entirely about tapping. Just watch his picking hand about 0:58, and you'll see what I'm talking about. www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsTTQdDd2qQ
