A guy i jam with has just bought a Boss ME8 ( they've been round awhile now) for £35 off e-bay, it sounds great! there doesn't seem to be a tone he can't get, i'm too lazy to lug my pedal board to our jam sessions so i just turn up with an amp and guitar and his tone blows me away! i used to hate the idea of multi effects, but i'm changing my mind, it might be out of your price range but the Vox Tonelab LE or SE are both even better than the Boss, it might be worth checkin out a Korg unit if your on a tight budget cause it's their 'REMS' technology that's used in the Vox Tonelab and Valvetronix range.

thanks bro... im actually thinking of getting individul pedals first...like a distortion, chorus, flanger and d delay...considering that with my playing style i wudn be using too many kinds of effects...any suggestions for particular models?
im currently looking at boss ds-2... anyone had a muck around with one of these?

It really depends on how much you want to spend.
The Boss DD3 Delay and the Boss CH-1 Chorus are great.
Never used one but the MXR Distortion + is meant to be pretty good, it depends on what sort of distortion you want really. If I remember there's a thread somewhere around here discussing distortion/overdrive pedals so maybe you should check that out. Oh yeah, go on the Boss site too, there's some good "special features" involving the distortion pedals, and lots of their other pedals, where you get to hear them in action and such, worth researching there.

Going the single pedal rout is much more expensive but gives you loads of versatility and easy control over just about every parameter you are ever going to want to tweak ! On the other hand you cant dial up patches altering multiple parameters simultaneously with singles which is really useful mid-gig. It is also possible to automate multiple patch changes via midi with a big old multi though that is getting out there and (IMHO) can cause more problems than it solves !
As far as singles are concerned, a very cool combo is a tremolo and a cry baby, really out there, especially into your amps dirty channel. Check out Lou Reeds "where gona have a real good time together" he really spaces out his guitar sound !
Seconded with the DD3, though I like the phaser as well. Check out "London Calling" by The Clash, a phaser is used on just about every track.
The Digitech Whammy is also very cool.
