yeeeep, its that time in every lad's life. the first car. I'm tired of driving my mom's car, and I've been working all summer to save up money for a car of my own. ...so I figured I'd get yall's opinion on the issue.
I'm still in school, rocking a part time job. I have to pay for everything here, so a gas-saver would be the only option. I'm looking for a 4 cylinder, preferably automatic, (manual is alright though... a manual is even better on gas, and more fun generally... but with all the hills around here, I always stall out in my dad's truck. ;D) I'd like a car with some "umph" behind it. Being a 4 cylinder, its hard to find a fast car, but I know its possible. oh, and the less expensive, the better. I want to spend about $2000. I just dont want a junk car that I have to put $500 a month into.
anywaaaayyys. the only cars I've checked out are: Saturn SL2 Nissan 240sx Honda CRX Jeep Wrangler.
...In a perfect world, I'd like the wrangler. however, they all are pretty much out of my price range. as for the Saturn, my friend had one, and its a real fun car. great on gas. I'm leaning towards this. the Nissan is a good racing car, and I love how it looks. (I like the pop up headlights... I've always thought those are sweeeet.) the honda... meh.
so yeah. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, that'd be sweet.

Why do you want a "racing car" when you're going to be driving on public roads?

+1 for Josh's suggestion on the Toyota. My first car was a Toyota Celica. My second car was a Toyota Supra. My third car was a Toyota Supra. I totalled the first two but ended up selling the third one with 260k miles on it. I sold it to a friend of mine and he ended up selling it with 300+ miles on it.

Unless you're going to be doing some off-roading, the Jeep just isn't very practical for your needs. It's as slow as a snail (especially the 4-cylinder), and it's not that great on gas (maybe 20mpg on a good day). However, they are loads of fun to drive. Especially with the top down and the doors off.

I've heard great things about Toyotas and Hondas as well. I know people who own both and swear by them - for dependability and re-sale value. Every car I've owned has been a manual transmission - I won't buy an automatic if i can help it.... it definately adds some extra pep for a four cylinder... and if you are anywhere where you will be doing driving in snow - they give you a lot more control in those types of situations. Right now I own a chev... and lets just say... my next car - won't be one.

I've never had any trouble with any of the Honda's, Toyota's or my current auto, a Subaru. All of them are great on gas, dependable as hell and as long as you keep up with the routine maintenance, they last damn near forever. Great cars. I hate to say this but stay away from American cars. There hasn't been a decent American car since they stopped making muscle cars back in the late seventies - early eighties.

When it comes to the 4 cyl. car with some power you have to go with the Honda, Toyota or Nissan. All these manufacturers make good reliable cars with good gas mileage and power for there size. The civic is a proven performer with some cool aftermarket add-ons both for performance and looks. It's very popular here in New York with the younger guys. As a mechanic with 25 years of experience those are my choices. Stay away from the Saturn. Hyundai makes a good car too but I would recommend the sonata or higher models. the excels are a bit blah. As a father of 2 boys who are new drivers I like them in bigger cars just because they're a little safer in a wreck.
