So what are the bare bones that i need to do any kind of recording on my PC, needs to be cheap too cause i'm only recording myself for the purpose of monitoring my level of guitar playing suckiness ;D i may also record some rhthym guitar parts to improvise over, i've been looking at >this< any good? i assume i'll need some recording software too? cakewalk, pro-tools or some such, any recommendations? again something cheap please, really don't need any bells and whistles.

For cheap, non-"serious" recording, I think that would be a great choice. You can get some pretty good tones out of the Line 6 software, but you have to be willing to tweak your ass off, and not pay attention to the name of anything.
For software, you could use Audacity, which is a free program, and not too shabby. If you want to go with a more widely used program, then any of the offerings from Cakewalk or Cubase will do fine. Each one has different versions catering to various usages and price ranges.
Two other things you might want to look into are a pair of studio monitors and a Shure SM57 mic. However, with the toneport, the mic would only be necessary if you wanted to mic a real amp / acoustic guitar / vocals. The studio monitors will give you a better picture of what's really going on with your sounds, but they aren't necessary if you just want to jam along with stuff and lay down some simple guitar tracks.
What is your price range for the recording gear?

Thanks for the info Eric, i don't have a specific price range in mind at this point as i wasn't initially looking to getting into recording, i got an email from a store that i use and the toneport was in the listings and at £37 i thought i might give it a try, i've been writing alot of riffs lately and it would be handy to record them for future reference, plus as i mentioned previously i may record some rhthym stuff to jam to, i don't need to record vocals or other instruments and i'm not bothered about capturing great tone or anything like that so i really only need a very basic set-up.

Then I don't see why the toneport wouldn't be good enough for your needs. I think stackny has one of the toneports, so maybe he'll chime in and tell you about his experience with it.
