So yeah, football (soccer) fans will know that David Beckham is going to start playing for an American team pretty soon, and the media over here are saying how it will take football to new levels in that country.
But I have to ask, is anyone in the states actually interested?

I played (soccer) for 11 years at many different levels and haven't thought about it in about 20 years. I think most Americans would tell you that soccer (for us) is a warm up sport much like T-ball. It's something the kids play to get into sports and then don't ever think of again after the age of 13. I'm not saying it's the right attitude to have, just speaking for Americans at large.
Having said that, there most certainly is a huge buzz surrounding Beckham coming to the states. I don't think it's so much that he's a soccer player, though, as much as it is another celebrity to ogle over. Americans can't seem to get enough of celebrities and the fact that he's married to Posh Spice only adds to the mayhem. There's more coverage of them on our gossip TV shows than there is on ESPN.

I've even heard about him going to California... But I really can't see it making that big of a difference though.

Never let our media fool you into underestimating the power of American apathy.

.... There's more coverage of them on our gossip TV shows than there is on ESPN. That pretty much says it all. There was an hour-long special program on TV here, devoted (and I chose that word carefully) to Victoria Beckham. The trailers promoting the show were enough to give me the dry heaves, but apparently the ratings were quite high. We suffer in a society that worships people who are famous for nothing more than being widely recognised.

We suffer in a society that worships people who are famous for nothing more than being widely recognised. We do indeed, and it seems anyone and everyone can become a "celebrity" now. Such as over here, they have this reality show called Big Brother, where contestants go and live together in a house for x amount of weeks and get voted off until there's a winner. After coming out of there suddenly everyone worships them. I really don't understand why.
