I happened upon an advertisement for a new line from Gretsch, the Brian Setzer Signature Hot Rod series. Real beauties no doubt but what struck me as odd was that they have one volume knob and no tone controls on the guitar. How does this work? Are you limited to the versatility of the amp alone? Seems kinda strange since it has two pick-ups and a switch to bounce back and forth between pickups but no tone controls? I find it odd considering that they are over $2k a pop.
Is this something new?
Thoughts?

Thanks! Good review. I love the look of those Gretsch guitars. To me, they represent the early days of rock better than just about anything else. Although I know that remark will get a number of Fender folks to get their hackles up... : )

With a guitar like that, you're at the mercy of your amp, which pickup you use, and your playing style to change the tone. Personally, I find the tone knob a useful tool. Other people have no need for it. EVH is one who comes to mind. His signature model guitars (not all of them, but most) don't have a tone knob. Some people feel like it's just one more thing to get in the way of pure guitar tone. I can't vouch for how much difference it makes to not have it though. It all comes down to personal taste... I personally like having the versatility the tone knob adds. btw, that's a pretty sexy guitar. Here's a pic of the hollowbody that I'm creaming my pants for: PRS Hollowbody I

I used to be ignorant towards the tone knob until I actually tried using it, now I think it's a useful addition to the guitar.
I like to select the neck pickup, engage the coil tap, and roll down the volume knob about 1/2, and the tone knob about 2/3; this gives a liquid smooth tone.

That's a sweetheart there Eric. Yeah, those Gretsch's are beauts. I absolutely love them. I always said that if I ever got rich, I would buy a White Falcon and mount it in a frame and hang it in my den.
Naw, I wouldn't. I'd play it!
Akira, I get a lot of use from the tone knobs on my guitars. I can't imagine not having that capacity with guitar. It would just feel wrong!

Believe me Jeff, if I had the cash, I would own one! They are sweet guitars. Love the tone of a Gretsch!
