What's a good power amp to use for a rack system? I picked up a used Peavey cab a week or so ago w/ 5150 speakers and I want to get a power amp to use with my Pod Pro as the pre amp.
I'm considering just buying a cheap solid state head to use, such as the Hartke GT60....plug the Pod Pro into the return of the effects loop....New it's around $150.
I want to be able to run 2 half stacks.....My Marshall for the "raw, good" tone, and another processed amp for effects and crazy sounds....Any suggestions?

You can't go wrong with a Peavey Classic 50/50 power amp. Good price, and it's all tube. It's not made anymore, so you'll have to find it used, which shouldn't be too hard. They also made a few more models with various tube setups. Carvin also makes a tube power amp that is priced fairly nice when compared to say a Marshall or Mesa power amp. I would definitely go with the Peavey first though.
When I had my POD Pro, I used it with a Mackie M800 power amp into a Marshall 1960a cab. I got some killer tones with it, but it would have sounded better with a tube power amp.

Thanks Bro, I'll check into those....
I've actually seen the Carvin amp your talking about, just wanted to see what all everyone would suggest.
Only thing is that I really don't want to spend too much cash on a poweramp in case I don't like how it sounds...basically just want to experiment. I know the tone will never compare to my JCM 800..

Yeah, you won't be able to top your 800 with the POD, but with a good power amp, and a good speaker cabinet, you'll be able to some awesome tones that will compliment the 800. There will, however, possibly be some better clean to slightly breaking up tones with the POD setup than with the 800. One big thing that helped me really fine tune the POD was finding out all of the little hidden parameter adjustments. Not sure if they're all even in the manual or not, but pretty much every knob on the POD changes some other parameter when holding down the TAP button.

Oh yeah, I've learned all the little tweaking tricks....Such as holding the tap button and turning the effects knob to pick the cabinets......and holding tap and turning the treble knob to turn presence on and off...countless little things like this..
A good clean tone is one thing I am after, the 800 just doesn't cut it here, although it's not awful with a chorus pedal on.

I used to like using the "Layer" amp model for some of my cleans. I like a somewhat dirty clean, so it was perfect for my style.
