So, how do you get your distorted/overdriven tones?
Personally, I use all of those methods. When I want a nice hard rock tone, I just use my amps distortion, but when I want to really juice it up for metal type tones, I boost the distortion channel with an MXR ZW-44 overdrive pedal. If I want more of a classic rock, or bluesy overdriven tone, I'll just use a Diamond J-Drive MK 3 overdrive pedal in front of my clean channel. It also has a clean boost, which lets me get some nice break up on the clean channel if I really dig into my guitar.
So, how do you satisfy your needs to get down and dirty with the nitty gritty?

Amp dirt for me...in the loop I use.... send>Boss CE-5 Chorus>Fish n' Chips 7Band EQ>Ibanez AD-9 analog delay>BBE Sonic Maximizer>return I am totally impressed with the BBE sometimes I use a EH Electric Mistress. but no distortion boxes fer me.

I like to have fuzz, just for tone purposes, though not to a point where it's impossible to tell what kind of chord I'm playing... Then it just sounds like shit.
I work with pedals mostly, though I think that tone starts with amp itself... Say for the guitar before that. After that point, there are a 9,999,999,999,999,999 ways to alter it past that.

I use the distortion from the amp, but I push the front end a bit by turning the level up on my compressor.
I have a Keeley DS-1 in the fx loop which I use to either make myself louder or to mess around with tone.

I strictly use the gain on my JCM 800. For leads I kick on the EQ for a slight boost...

I like my amp's distortion more than either of my distortion pedals, but it's tons of fun to use all three at once. And I often do.
It's the ultimate in fuzz.
(...that's what she said.)
